why would u take a counter spell for 3 converted costs if can have one for 2 ?

Probably because Deprive means that you have to lose a land drop, just to get back where you started. And since hes playing a lot of expensive cards without mana acceleration (besides the spawn, of course) and this isnt a landfall deck, that wouldnt be such a good idea.
